You call that a mixtape?

What does the term mixtape mean to you? If your a real 80′s baby, meaning you grew listening to music in the 80′s and 90′s, then it’s means just what the word says, a mix tape. Their is a mixture of GOOD old or new music on that tape. Well today tapes are obsolete and CD making has become so wide spread and cheap that anyone can make a “mixtape” but should we really call it that. Real mixtapes are a dying breed in the hip hop industry. Back in the 90′s it was the best way to hear the new music from your favorite or up and coming rappers from big name DJ’s like DJ Clue, Tony Touch, Kayslay or Cutmaster C just to name a few. Those mixtapes had actual mixing, blending and scratching by the DJ’s. Those mixtapes made you feel like the party was right in the deck and the DJ was going to play only the best music. Today’s “mixtapes” I would say fall into two categories. First their are the “Internet DJ’s” who take a few new songs from the big name artists (even if the songs aren’t good) a few new tracks they think people will like because a big name artist is on it (but it’s still a suspect song) and a few freestyles from any artist they can find and call this a mixtape. No real flow to the music, no mixing of the tracks or blending it all together, no feeling that their was any effort behind the “mixtape”. The second type is the “Artist Mixtape” where either the rapper puts out the CD or a DJ hosts it (for a fee). This has actually become the mixtape staple today not an actual mix of music but a single artist putting out a collection of their latest pre-album tracks or freestyles. I have to admit that back when 50 Cent set the mixtape game on fire with his collection of freestyle CD’s it seemed the way to go but now with easy Internet access and the right amount of money you can buy yourself a “mixtape” and put it all over the web. Don’t get me wrong their are still some real mixtape DJ’s out there that I don’t want to offend but the term mixtape is being used too loosely. Next time lets try something like “pre-album” or project or independent album/release or even the always classic term demo. If I wanted to hear just one good song every couple of tracks I would turn on the radio. Mixtape Torrent has been my go to site for mixtapes for years and I have seen it go from real DJ mixtapes to “internet DJ” mixtapes to now being mostly artist “‘mixtapes”. Who else wants the real mixtapes to come back?

We The Best! DJ Khaled brings you the best again

DJ Khaled keeps bringing you the hits each and every time he drops an album or collaborates with his teams Maybach Music Group or YMCMB. This CD is like a 2012 All Star squad with the newest hit artists (Meek Mill, Ace Hood, Future, Nicki Minaj, J. Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Kendrick Lemar, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana, 2 Chainz, Wale, Tyga, Mack Maine & Kirko Bangz) and mixed with the big established artists (Lil Wayne, T.I., Kanye West, Rick Ross, Scarface, Nas, DJ Premier &  Jadakiss). For a compilation with such talent this is good album. The production is there with all the best producers (Jahlil Beats, Hit Boy, The Runners, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, DJ Premier, Boi-1da & DJ Toomp) including DJ Khaled himself of course. Its hard not to find a few songs on here that end up on your summer playlist. I guess DJ Khaled was right “We The Best” because he brought you the best.

The Boss, Rick Ross, is back!

Rick Ross has been a force to be deal with in hip-hop today. He is connected with some of the hottest artists (Meek Mill, Wale, Young Money & much more) and definitely some of the hottest producers in the game. When Ross and DJ Khaled connect its almost a given hit. These guys know music and say what you want about them but they work hard and get results. This album was probably his best album to date and that just proves my point that Ross is running with the best of the best in the rap game. The features Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Nas, Andre 3000, Ne-yo, Meek Mill, Omarion, Wale, Usher & John Legend all just speak for the great company Ross keeps.

Busta Rhymes drops free “album”

Busta Rhymes has always been outside the box and this time he does it by releasing a “free album” on the internet. Could this be the new wave? or is it just a “mixtape” release? Mixtapes are basically albums anyway in today’s music industry, they just don’t have the large budget of advertisement behind them. Year Of The Dragon is the closest thing to an album that you can get so lets just leave it at that. This CD is tight! He has a list of guest appearances Rick Ross, Trey Songz, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, Cam’ron, Robin Thicke, Reek Da Villian, Vybz Kartel, Maino & Anthony Hamilton. Busta is back and might have just start a new trend. You’re all welcome!

Mike Check releases the “Beast”

Last night I got to be a part of the video release party for Mike Check‘s newest creation “Beastly”. The video will blow you away! The production quality, the visuals, the make-up artists & body paints all come together very well. It just shows you how much can be done when you put that much work into a project even with a small budget. The track “Beastly” was produced by Will Guardian (@willguardian201 on Twitter) and matches Mike Check’s raw energy, stage presence and rhyme skills. When these two collaborate on a track its going to be a hit. Well enough talking here is the video enjoy and repost!

Nas – Life is Good (album review)

Finally its here and yes LIFE IS GOOD! Nas is back but not without some growth and maturity in his music. This album has everything from the God Son: classic raw rap, knowledge rap, r&b love tracks, & collabo tracks. Like I said Nas is back with growth so don’t be disappointed that its not the classic Nas you grew up on in the 90′s. If you want classic raw rap then Loco-motive (Large Professor), Back When, The Don, Nasty & The Black Bond are for you. If you want knowledge then you have World’s An Addiction(Anthony Hamilton), Daughters & You Wouldn’t Understand. Need that R&B love then you got Stay, Bye Baby, Roses & Where’s The Love. Can’t forget the collabs either for a little extra flavor to the mix Accident Murderers (Rick Ross), Reach Out (Mary J. Blige), Summer On Smash (Swizz Beatz, Miguel) & Cherry Wine (Amy Winehouse). Mix this all up and you have probably the best album by Nas since Stillmatic.

3 Kings! Ross, Dre & Jay!

Ok here is the latest leak track from the new Rick Ross album dropping July 31th God Forgives, I Don’t. This track has shows some serious potential for the album. Depends on who you ask but I see the 3 Kings of the Rap game from the three “coasts”. You get the typical verses from Ross and Dr. Dre but Jay-Z goes on a little freestyle at the end of the track. Check it out!

50 is back again! NEW mixtape 5 (Murder By Numbers)

For the second time in the a little over a month 50 Cent is back with another mix, 5 (Murder by Numbers) (DOWNLOAD). Say what you want about him but he keeps pumping out the music. His production isn’t at the level he had with his first few albums but he still comes up with some good tracks regardless. He is also showing support to some new names to the game, Kidd Kidd, Hayes & Schoolboy Q. If numbers is the game then yes he can still murder the mixtape game.
